The series, set in Encino, California, is a story of love, divorce and remarriage. Richard Evans, an easy-going architect, and his bossy, formidable, and efficient wife, Judy, the editor of "Screen World" magazine, terminate their relationship after seventeen years. They have one son, Jeff. Jerry Standish, a philandering ex-quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams, now the owner of the Polynesia Paradise Cafe, and his wife Susan, end their marriage of ten years after he cheats on her one time too many. They have two children, Cindy and Jan.

Seeking information concerning the development of a research center for underprivileged children, Susan and Richard meet, fall in love, marry and establish housekeeping in the Standish home. Jerry Standish maintains a bachelor apartment one block away, and Judy Evans also lives nearby. Episodes relate the struggles of the newlyweds to find serenity in a neighborhood where they are plagued by the constant intrusion of their former spouses.
