It is often said that the US is a Christian nation. People reference our founding fathers as believers. But even a quick reading of history indicates that these men were diests. They did not believe in a god that is involved in people's lives. Moreover, there was a deep anti-clerical bias by Jefferson, Washington, Franklin and others. These men were inspired by reason, logic and science. They were, in the end, empiricists. As Franklin noted: Lighthouses are far more useful than churches.
