Good Introduction to Sally Lockhart

star44

If you like your mysteries in the Sherlock Holmes tradition, I think you will enjoy this Masterpiece Theater show. I first saw Billie Piper as Rose on Doctor Who. She does a good job as Sally Lockhart. Currently, I am reading the second book in the Sally Lockhart series, Shadow in the North. It has also been adapted for Masterpiece Theater. Phillip Pullman's novels are getting a lot of recent attention. The first book in His Dark Materials series, The Golden Compass, is being made into a movie with Nicole Kidman.

About The Show

Sally Lockhart gets a letter from her father just before he drowns with seven blessings warning her of danger to come. She goes to Mr. Higgs, her father's colleague in hopes that he will be able to help her understand the message. But he dies of fear. The only other witness to the strange events is Jim Taylor. Jim helps Sally to investigate her father's death. They discover that the Ruby of Agrapur is at the center of the mystery, but Sally is not the only one looking for the gem--Mrs. Holland is also hunting for it. While trying to get away from Mrs. Holland, Sally meets a photographer, Frederick Garland who she falls in love with. Together with Fred and Jim, Sally searches for information from her past that will provide the answer to the mystery of her father's murder.
