During an ocean voyage, George Papadopolis, a pro football player turned sportscaster, and Katherine Calder-Young, a fellow passenger, meet, fall in love, and marry aboard ship. Two weeks later, when returning home to Chicago, George learns that his friends, Travis and Gert Long, have been killed in an automobile accident and that their seven-year-old son, Webster -- to whom he is godfather -- is now his ward and responsibility.
