Blamed by her in-laws for the tragic death of her husband, Honey Bailey finds herself penniless and homeless. She is forced to leave her sons, Hub, age 12, and Fat, age 10, with their wealthy and controlling grandmother, in the mining town of New Bedford, in order to find a job in the city.
