The HFPA Association and searchers were in agreement on at least one thing: "Grey's Anatomy" counts among the best network offerings. The medical drama mixes enough bloody mayhem, social drama, and rampant makeouts to intoxicate its largely female fans. The irony of course is that Katherine Heigl, who earned a Golden Globe best actress nomination, may sit out the ceremonies rather than walk across the writer’s picket line. "Smallville" may recount the adventures of a young Superman, but the CW show is a shocking seven years old – those are gray hairs in the TV industry. This year’s introduction of Clark Kent’s long-lost (well, long-suspended animation) cousin Kara, played by Laura Vandervoort, has given the series new juice and buzz, while a clone storyline lets some characters have their cake and eat it too. John McCain gave "Prison Break" a plug in a recent debate, but the FOX drama decided to return behind bars. The back-to-the-jailhouse rock now has put the first season in reverse: Lincoln (Dominic Purcell), who had been wrongly imprisoned, is now the one who has to get his brother Michael (the eminently buzzworthy Wentworth Miller) out. The season’s not over yet, with the strike-induced hiatus set to end with a new episode on January 14. Now that’s an escape plan, and the kind of thinking that puts this cell melodrama in fourth place among Y! What more can we say about "The Sopranos?" The HBO mob family got under our pop culture skin, and the intensity from its Search fans was such that they even wanted to know in their final days, “What is Tony Soprano’s ring tone?” Well, the bell tolled for the Jersey clan, and gave the show its last chance to register its Buzz. They just made it – in a respectable fifth-place showing. Badabing... you know the rest. Is a tornado ripping through Wisteria Lane the equivalent of ski-jumping a shark? Absolutely not, according to ardent fans of "Desperate Housewives," the fourth-most searched comedy on Y! Buzz. Off-camera tales of potentially cheating spouses and revealing photos help its buzz, but a focused plot this year stimulated critical adulation, which makes the lack of love from the Globes surprising. The writers’ strike could mean a long time in finding who didn’t survive the twister. Maybe the producers ought to consider a one-season plot detour to the land of Oz. Perennial nominee "The Office" won’t see a Globe on their filing cabinet for this past season, but the NBC show’s in the running for the Writers Guild Awards. Unlike the other comedies on this list, which saw a Search decline compared to 2006, the sitcom ratcheted up a 44% increase this year. However there's no “Office” holiday party to celebrate due to the strike. You can always compare the Brit and the Yank versions or watch Rainn Wilson moonlighting to fill the empty, aching void.
