Now that the fall TV season is well under way, how are things shaking out amongst the freshmen shows? Even though there are a handful of runaway hits ("Modern Family," "Glee," "The Good Wife," and "Vampire Diaries"), there are a ton of series that are already showing signs of trouble, and even a couple that have already been canceled. After airing only two episodes, The CW officially yanked "The Beautiful Life" from its schedule, making the Ashton Kutcher-produced drama the season's first sinker. Perhaps ABC should have thought twice about calling a show "The Forgotten," because that's exactly what happened to this procedural, starring Christian Slater, about a team of amateur detectives who solve Jane/John Doe murders. It was doomed from the start! We're pretty sure no one even knew "The Forgotten" existed, which accounts for the show's awful ratings. For those who did tune in (most likely stragglers from its "Dancing With the Stars" lead-in), the majority quickly abandoned the truly forgettable series. The Kelsey Grammer laugh-track-heavy sitcom "Hank" is also in grave danger of tanking. Critics have skewered it and the show's dismal ratings indicate that audiences feel the same way. "Eastwick," ABC's comedy based on the 1987 film, premiered decently, but has slipped in the ratings. Even the show's pretty faces -- Rebecca Romijn, Lindsay Price, and Jamie Ray Newman -- can't seem to draw in viewers. Unless these witches can cast a spell on the executives, "Eastwick's" chances of renewal are slim to none. We'd tell Rebecca Romijn to jump ship and return to her glory days at the Mode offices of "Ugly Betty," but it looks like "Betty" is suffering from possible cancellation woes of its own. The hour-long comedy started off as a hit, but Season 3 underperformed and the alphabet network has moved it to the TV graveyard (aka Friday). NBC picked up the cop drama "Southland" for a second season, but even before new episodes got a chance to air, the network abruptly axed the show. The folks behind "Southland" are shopping the series around, and a move to TNT could happen. Cross your fingers, "Southland" fans! Meanwhile, Amy Poehler's "Parks and Recreation" has hit its stride this fall, after getting off to an inconsistent start in the spring. Still, "Parks" is only drawing half as many viewers as "The Office," which puts it on deathwatch. Also in critical condition are the Peacock's medical-themed dramas "Trauma" and "Mercy." "Trauma's" action-packed special effects didn't attract as many viewers as NBC had hoped. The premiere did worse than its "Heroes" lead-in, which itself was the 4-year-old show's lowest rated original episode. Not good. "Mercy," which focuses on three nurses as they balance their personal and professional lives, hasn't really done any better than "Trauma." We're not holding our breaths for a pickup, and we're OK with that since Michelle Trachtenberg belongs over on "Gossip Girl" as Georgina Sparks anyway. And "Law & Order's" milestone 20th season will likely be its last now that its been moved to the Friday night deathslot, but fans can find comfort in syndicated episodes and, of course, the franchise's spinoffs, which are still alive and well.Tuesday, October, 20, 2009, 11:20 PM

Alex O'Loughlin just can't seem to catch a break. The hunky Australian, who starred in CBS' short-lived "Moonlight" (which had a rabid-fan following, but poor ratings), will probably leave our TV screens once again now that his medical drama "Three Rivers" has officially become a dud for CBS. The show posted lackluster ratings for its premiere, and its second week fared even worse (apparently, that's possible). We predict that CBS will give "Three Rivers" the boot very soon. We'll miss you, Alex! "Cold Case" has been on the chopping block for a while now, and the cancellation rumors could come to fruition at the end of the season. Panned by critics and undoubtedly the weakest link in the big CBS comedy lineup, we were worried for "Accidentally on Purpose." But luckily for Jenna Elfman, the show has recently seen an uptick in ratings. We think the comedy will stick around for a while … or at least nine months.Tuesday, October, 20, 2009, 11:20 PM

Fans of "Dollhouse" can rest easy (for now, at least) because Fox recently announced that even though "Dollhouse's" numbers aren't great, the network will air all 13 episodes that were ordered for the second season. If the ratings for the show don't pick up (and soon!), it's unlikely that Fox will order additional episodes and this will probably be the series' last season. Fox's two half-hour Friday comedies, "'Til Death" and "Brothers," also have death knocking at their doors. "'Til Death" has clung to Fox for four seasons despite low ratings. This is a bad marriage, and we can't imagine the network keeping around a bad seed for much longer. The new comedy "Brothers," about the rivalry between a retired NFL player (Michael Strahan) and his brother, has been experiencing anemic ratings since its debut. With the cancellation of "The Beautiful Life," the revamped "Melrose Place" has the distinction of being The CW's lone poor-performing scripted series. The show's ratings have decreased since its premiere, particularly with the coveted female demographic, but the network is counting on viewers to tune in this November for the return of Heather Locklear. We’re excited to see Locklear’s Amanda Woodward again, but can she prevent the new "Melrose Place" from being a one-season-wonder (à la last fall's equally poor ratings-getter "Privileged")?
