Never mess with a classic
June 3, 2008
I saw the original Andromeda Strain when originally released in theaters back in 1971. The original version is still the best and a Sci Fi classic. This one looked like a made for TV movie not a major production.

I loved the mystery behind Andromeda!

This movie had it all. Suspense, science, technology, heroism and love. It's not a far fetched storyline, touching on the ability that our military and government have confidential and classified information regarding time travel and other forms of intellegent life outside of our world. It makes you think. Can something like this actually happen in our lifetime or are we truly destroying the future for our children. All around, it was a well written and directed movie. I love movies with endings that leave you wondering and this one certainly did that.

You're kidding me, right

I have to confess I am a sci fi geek, though of the earlier generation when we simply and gratefully belonged to the out crowd.” The original Andromeda Strain was not only a classic but a ground breaker that turned sci fi movies on their back and redefined not only their ability to hold our attention but also to educate us. So, why do I title my review “You’re kidding me, right?” With respect to any and all, who disagree with me, this rendition of Creighton’s original work didn’t just fall short…it never reached lift off. I have to assume, at some point, that they never saw the original. So, when I read something to the effect of wanting more…You’re kidding me…right? Okay, that’s harsh, but it’s not aimed at those who enjoyed it. After all, I watched it in its entirety. And it did have a few, though modest, redeeming moments. Science is science and fiction is fiction, yet they can make creative and engaging bedfellows. It can be a marriage made in heaven or hell. This one fell either into purgatory from heaven, or perhaps crawled up from hell, depending on your point of reference.
I really aim my criticism at those who wrote and produced it. Come on, really, you could have done better. I think the final head-shaking, eye-roller for me was near the ending when one hero falls to his death. In this scene a second hero climbs down to cut off the thumb of first and then throws the thumb up the same lethal distance that took the thumb owner’s life. The thumb spiraled slowly through the air to be retrieved by the hero on the scaffolding. You’re kidding me…right?
For each of us there is a differing opinion. That’s what makes for interesting material.

Well............

At least it wasn't a rerun (except for the second night of episode one.) I'm willing to give any new show a chance. It certainly would have been much, much better without so many commercial breaks. Good actors.
