Pilot
Episode 1 Originally aired: August 5, 2003Public Defender Sandy Cohen invites Ryan Atwood, a teen on the brink of becoming a delinquent, to come live in his guest house. Sandy's son Seth takes a liking to Ryan, but Kirsten, his wife, wants him out immediately. When trouble ensues at a party, it looks like Ryan's stay in the O.C. will be short-lived.

The Model Home
Episode 2 Originally aired: August 12, 2003Ryan smells the prospect of ending up in a foster home and tries to bolt from the Cohen house. Seth stops him and plots to stow him away in an unfinished housing development. Marissa joins them in the plan, but her involvement eventually brings Luke into the mix and the house Ryan was going to crash in burns to the ground.

The Gamble
Episode 3 Originally aired: August 19, 2003Ryan is reunited with his mother, but the reunion is short-lived when, in front of the Cohen's, she slips back into her addictive behavior at a Casino Night event. After this, even Kirsten agrees that Ryan is better off in their care. After Julie finds out that Kirsten gave Jimmy one hundred thousand dollars, she lets Sandy know.

The Debut
Episode 4 Originally aired: August 26, 2003After the incident with his mother, Kirsten and Sandy take legal responsibility for Ryan. Kirsten's loan to Jimmy makes the Cohen family a part of Jimmy's fraud investigation. Ryan finds himself on the outside again when he agrees to accompany Anna to a Cotillion.

The Outsider
Episode 5 Originally aired: September 2, 2003Ryan tries to become more independent by taking a job at The Crab Shack, where he meets Donnie, an echo of his former past. Donnie invitates him to a party where a tough crowd will be in attendance, a point which worries Ryan and intrigues Seth. The party happens to be on the same night Ryan has a date with Marissa, having finally worked up the courage to ask her out.

The Girlfriend
Episode 6 Originally aired: September 9, 2003Kirsten's father Caleb visits for his birthday with a much younger girlfriend and gives Kirsten an earful about all the details of her life. Jimmy is rejected on two fronts as Julie tells him that she's filing for divorce and he is denied work by Caleb, only to have Caleb take interest in Julie's business venture. Marissa can't make up her mind about Luke and Ryan.

The Escape
Episode 7 Originally aired: September 16, 2003Marissa has a hard time handling information about her parent's break and her boyfriend Luke's cheating on a trip with her friends to Tijuana. Marissa mixes pills and alcohol with drastic results. Sandy looks to a job offer with a private law firm to balance out his ill-feelings about his wife's interactions with Jimmy.

The Rescue
Episode 8 Originally aired: October 29, 2003Julie takes out her anger with what happened to Marissa in Mexico on Ryan. Ryan abandons the dean of Harbor High School's placement exam in an effort to save Marissa from being sent away.

The Heights
Episode 9 Originally aired: November 5, 2003Summer has ended, school has begun and Summer is jealous of Seth's fledgling fling with Anna. Kirsten worries about Sandy and his new coworker. Ryan fights with Luke over Marissa and it's up to Marissa to forgive Ryan when the two are stuck atop a ferris wheel.

The Perfect Couple
Episode 10 Originally aired: November 12, 2003Marissa and Ryan celebrate a week of being together. Anna and Seth start to develop more of a bond while Summer continues to hold back. Julie invites Jimmy, Marissa and Ryan to her charity event in the hopes of patching things up between them all.

Episode 11 Originally aired: November 19, 2003Marissa accompanies Ryan on a prison visit of his brother Trey. As they return, Thanksgiving at the Cohen's house generally falls apart with Seth caught between Summer and Anna.

The Secret
Episode 12 Originally aired: November 26, 2003Seth tries to make amends with Summer and Anna after having made out with both of them on Thanksgiving. Caleb and Julie take a break from each other when they realize they're both looking for something different. Kirsten's secret circulates and comes back to Sandy. Ryan and Luke find common ground when forced to work together on a school assignment.

The Best Chrismukkah Ever
Episode 13 Originally aired: December 3, 2003Seth tries to win Ryan over to the combination holiday he's created even as he deals with his feelings for the two women in his own life. Ryan finds similarities between O.C. Christmas and his family Christmas as Marissa has a hard time coping and turns to the bottle. Kirsten helps Sandy outwit her father on a land deal.

The Countdown
Episode 14 Originally aired: December 17, 2003Ryan and Marissa's plans to spend a quiet New Year's Eve together are foiled, first by Seth's presence and then when Marissa is invited elsewhere. Kirsten's sister decides to throw a party at the Cohen residence. Ryan tries to beat the New Year's clock and find Marissa for a midnight kiss.

The Third Wheel
Episode 15 Originally aired: January 7, 2004Ryan gets empowered to help Oliver out of a troublesome situation and has to decide whether he will or not. Seth, however, has come to a decision of choosing Anna or Summer, but wonders how to go about informing the losing party.

Episode 16 Originally aired: January 14, 2004Sandy and Jimmy team up for a business venture. Oliver tests the bond between Ryan and Marissa when he reveals that he tried to kill himself.

Episode 17 Originally aired: January 21, 2004Sandy and Jimmy purchase a local restaurant called the Lighthouse. Kirsten has bad feelings about Julie's new position of model-home designer with the Newport Group. Seth's jealousy over Summer's boyfriend causes him to wonder if he made the right choice. Ryan's attempt to expose Oliver may land him in hot water.

The Truth
Episode 18 Originally aired: February 11, 2004Caleb asks Kirsten to drop Julie from the company. Sandy and Kirsten evaluate their decision to let Ryan into their lives as he continues to land in trouble. Ryan teams up with Luke in an effort to save Marissa from Oliver and, when Marissa learns the truth, Ryan and Sandy rush in to help her.

The Heartbreak
Episode 19 Originally aired: February 18, 2004Ryan can't get over the way Marissa treated him during the Oliver fiasco. Things get tougher on their relations when Ryan's ex arrives in town. Seth and Summer have sex leaving Seth uncertain about his performance until Summer confesses that she was also a virgin. Jimmy learns of a secret admirer. Luke lets Mrs. Cooper know of his attraction.

Episode 20 Originally aired: February 25, 2004Marissa and Ryan continue to have problems putting the past behind them. Ryan learns Theresa's real motivation for being in the O.C. Seth feels ignored by Summer in social situations.

Episode 21 Originally aired: March 3, 2004Ryan tries to help Theresa build a life in the O.C. Jimmy spies Luke with his estranged wife. Anna decides to move back to Pittsburgh and Seth tries to get to the airport to stop her.

Episode 22 Originally aired: March 24, 2004Ryan and Seth accompany Summer and Marissa to an actor's party in Los Angeles. Seth becomes jealous as Summer makes time with the actor, but the tables turn when Seth meets a girl at the party. Ryan continues to worry about the effect Luke and Julie's affair will have on Marissa if she finds out.

The Nana
Episode 23 Originally aired: March 31, 2004Sandy's mother arrives in town for Passover. Seth tries to keep Summer hidden, fearing disapproval, but Summer wants to live up to the challenge of winning Nana over. Ryan searches for Marissa, who has gone missing after overhearing Luke confess to being intimate with her mother.

Sandy comes to a crossroads with The Lighthouse where he can either get rid of Jimmy or get a liquor license. Caleb asks Julie to marry him.

Episode 26 Originally aired: April 28, 2004Seth and Ryan follow Caleb to Vegas to celebrate his final days before marrying Julie even as Kristen tries to organize a bachelorette party. Marissa and Teresa make time and learn more about each other.

The Ties That Bind
Episode 27 Originally aired: May 5, 2004The Julie Cooper wedding holds surprises for all members of the O.C. Theresa announces her pregnancy and waffles on whether or not she should have the baby. When she decides to have the baby, Ryan tells his friends he's going to leave with her to help. The people that Ryan touched in the O.C. begin to falter in his absence.
