The unique premise of this show is that you are forced to empathize with a serial killer and challenge your value system. Dexter is the good cop/bad cop/judge/jury/executioner all rolled into one character. I find myself saying, "Hey. Wait a minute. I can't feel sorry for a serial killer" or "I never thought a serial killer would have a code of honour".

The "sunny" backdrop of Miami also breaks from the usual dark, gritty crime dramas.

Great plotline. Great characters (except for the sister who isn't entirely believable as a cop).

I watched the very first episode of Law & Order 16 years ago and have been a faithful fan ever since--EVEN after they replaced Mike Logan (Chris Noth). At least Mike Logan has returned on the Criminal Intent spinoff of the series. I am eternally grateful for that.

My favourite characters were/are Ben Stone, Mike Logan, Paul Robinette, Lenny Briscoe, Abby Carmichael, Adam Schiff and Jamie Gordon.

My least favourites? Ray Curtis

My fave spinoff? Law & Order: SVU (but Criminal Intent is a close second now that Mike Logan is back. But I don't like his past and current partner.)
