    The World Honors The Who

    July 17, 2008
When the very best artists and musicians gather to honor one rock band it leaves very little doubt as to The Who's impact on the world. The Foo Fighters, Incubus, Flaming Lips, and most certainly Pearl Jam put the pressure on themselves to perform their respective Who tracks in a manner that would make The Who and Who fans proud. I could not imagine how difficult it would be to emulate the greatest live rock band of all time but I do know that I saw four increadible rock bands do just that!

Jack Black from Tenacious D summarized it best during his performance of Squeeze Box by stating "The Who is the greatest rock band in the world". And now the world knows it!

    5 star tribute

    July 19, 2008
First of all, Jimmers, as you wrote that you did not see Pearl Jam, make an effort to see them play tribute with two wonderful copies from Quadro. If you are a true WHO fan, it would really hit you in the gut that they did what they did. I am not a big Eddie Vedder or PJ fan other than he is from Chicago and he loves the Who, but the tribute was VERY heartwarming.

The rest of the bands I thought were great, I never heard of Incumbus and never really heard the sounds of the Flaming Lips other than a Podcast of the lead guy singing can't explain with PT. I thought the Foo fighters were solid. 2nd to Pearl Jam.

As far as the greatest rock and roll band in the world...I can say that I have seen them play and sound better but this forum is unusual. Consider the difficulty of a tribute to a comic, and have 4-5 other comics before you use your stuff.

They did not have the passion of a "one off" concert like the NYC tribute, as they blew EVERYONE there away, yet they still played with a purpose and desire to entertain. I look forward to seeing them on tour this fall, though I won't attend as many shows as I did in 2006.

    Long live the WHO.

    Long time Who fan!!

    July 19, 2008
I thought the show was very good. Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, and Incubus did very commendable jobs covering the Who songs. I thought Flaming Lips were not very good. Their lead singer was off key much of the time.

However the Who's performance provided an interesting contrast. It showed me two things. First of all is that the greatest contrast between bands is the actual songs. The Who have a tremendous body of work to choose from due to the incredible song writing ability of Pete Townshend, who is clearly one of the greatest rock/pop songwriters of the last 50 years. He has written a lot of good songs during his solo ventures as well. I would think that he would be in the top 10 of all time for this time period (inlcuding Lennon/McCartney, Brian Wilson, Jagger/Richards, John/Taupin, Dylan, and a few others). I doubt any of the performers this night will contribute to our musical storehouses on a level close to what Pete and the Who have done so it must have been a great honor to share the stage with them but it might have been a bit intimidating as well.

I have seen the Who live twice (1969 and 2007), so I've seen the old and the new and I've seen a lot of other bands in the past 40 years. I have to say the Who are probably the best live rock band that I have ever seen (especially with the Ox and the Loon on stage).

I don't know if young people today truly appreciate the legacy of the Who, but those of us who have been around for a while do. I grew up during a true golden age of rock/pop music and I really appreciate what groups like the Who have done and what they continue to do with their performances which are as energized and vibrant as anything out there. I don't know how long they will continue but I bought their latest album and I'll go see them again if they come in the next few years because they are that good and I'd rather listen to good Who songs performed well than any new stuff I've heard lately.

    What a tribute!

    July 18, 2008
As a young Who fan, I was really excited to see the world of music honor what I consider to be the greatest musical act to ever set foot on the earth. The show exceeded my expectations with great performances by all of the acts honoring The Who. Pearl Jam really stood out from the rest of the tribute acts and turned out to be the surprise of the night to me. Their renditions of two Quadrophenia classics were really fantastic. The Who were at the top of their game. You really have to give it up to Roger Daltrey. The man has been belting out tunes since his career started 45 years ago and he still sounds great. The band was as solid as I've seen recently. They really performed their hearts out. Kudos to The Who for over 40 years of astonishing music, the music world would be very different without them. It's just a shame that Keith Moon and John Entwistle aren't alive to have seen this. Rest in peace guys.
