What the Heck Was Up With Shemar Moore During the Emmys Telecast?

Shemar Moore is known for being a smooth operator, but he didn't come off that way during the Emmys. The "Criminal Minds" star served as the "social media reporter" during the telecast, but he was more awkward than suave.

Despite nearly 20 years in showbiz, including a four-year stint as host of "Soul Train," the 43-year-old heartthrob was uncharacteristically tongue-tied and stumbled over his lines nearly every time the camera was on him. And while "The Young and the Restless" star is known for his playful banter and love of the ladies, his delivery was off and it felt very uncomfortable. The stars who appeared with him felt it, too, if the looks on their faces were any indication.

That was no more evident than when he was teasing Carrie Underwood's performance, which was a somewhat somber tribute to the year 1963, including the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. He said, "Including a fabulous performance by this lady right here, as sexy as she wants to be, Carrie Underwood," as he motioned to her body with his hand. The demure country singer looked embarrassed and laughed nervously; she looked down as the segment ended.

Moore's bit with "Mom" stars Anna Faris and Allison Janney had a similar vibe. Halle Berry's ex introduced them by calling them, "These two beautiful, sexy, vivacious women that I love." Janney, 53, gave Moore a smile and put her hand on his shoulder, but Faris looked down then crossed her arms over her body.

Could the awkwardness be attributed to too many spirits backstage? At one point Moore said he had the "best seat in the house" in the green room, "where all the superstars are hanging out – drinkin' – and talking a whole lot of mess."

While a rep for Moore has not yet responded to Yahoo's request for comment about his appearance, there is no shortage of people willing to weigh in. Twitter was on fire with comments about him, most of which weren't that complimentary.

Despite the criticism, Moore maintained his positive attitude, at least on Twitter. As the show ended, he wrote, "And that's a WRAP!!!! Had the best time at the #emmys."

So he had a great time, which is all that matters. Right?
