Can NBC's 'Welcome to the Family' Be the New 'Modern Family'?

With the mega-success of ABC's "Modern Family," the other networks have been scrambling to find their own hit blended-family comedies. This fall, NBC hopes that theirs will be "Welcome to the Family."

The premise revolves around two families — one white, one Latino — who come together when their newly-graduated daughter and son announce they're expecting a baby and getting married.

Mike O'Malley and Mary McCormack star as the Yoders, parents of ditzy Molly (Ella Rae Peck). Meanwhile, Ricardo Chavira and Justina Machado are the Hernandezes, whose son Junior (Joey Haro) is an ambitious smarty-pants.

Of course, it's not all sunshine and happy faces. The two dads don't initially get along — it's all a bit "Romeo and Juliet"-like. But there is a baby on the way, so can these two families find a way to play nice?

Just as "Modern Family" features characters of all stripes, "Welcome to the Family" wanted to include a Latino family in its blended situation.

As creator Mike Sikowitz explained to TV critics last month, "For me, it was more important to just do a show that I feel like reflects Los Angeles or really anywhere in the country today. And I was just trying to bring two different families together."

But while the culture clash will be a part of the show, Chavira noted, "It's more universal than that. It's just merely a texture to the story. And there's so many other things that are so much more universal in terms of family and young love and things like that that are far more prominent in this show than the aspect of culture."

Just like "Modern Family," this is a single-camera comedy, and the casting is top-notch. But whether "Welcome to the Family" turns out to be as popular and beloved as ABC's Emmy-winning series will be up to the viewing audience.
