When Kate Hudson gave birth to her and her fiancé Muse singer Matthew Bellamy's son, Bingham, just three months after they announced their engagement, we thought a wedding was right around the corner. But three years later, there's still no official date. Instead, it seems like the former pregnant-and-engaged actress is focusing on building a solid relationship.

"Relationships are the most challenging things," Hudson says in the May issue of SELF. "It's where you do the most work in your life. You come face-to-face with yourself, and if you can deal with realizing we're all flawed, accept it and work with it, you might have a really amazing, lasting relationship."

Hudson also reveals she looks to one of Hollywood's longest-lasting couples for inspiration when the going gets tough: her mom Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. "If I look at my parents, who've been together thirtysomething years, I'd say no matter what they've been through, they share similar values and really like each other," she tells the magazine.

Though Hawn and Russell have never married, they raised three children together and have stood the test of time. Not a bad example for Hudson as she plans her wedding, slowly but surely.

When the time does come for her to wear a wedding dress (something similar to her knockout Oscars gown, perhaps?), the star will certainly be in good shape. "My workout mantra is 'break a sweat every day,'" she reveals. "Even if it's just for 20 minutes."

And along with her healthy bod, she has a positive mind. "I think happiness is a practice," she further explains. "But not the sort you find in self-help books, where you smile and have a vision board. You're fooling yourself to think that's how you're going to find it. I love the idea of a gratitude journal, but there are times when mine turns into a venting journal. Not so grateful, just a big ol' vent!"

Her attitude is so refreshing! The May 2014 issue of SELF magazine hits newsstands on April 29.
