Michelle Obama Joins Instagram, Continues to Be the Coolest

Welcome to Instagram, FLOTUS!

First lady Michelle Obama has officially joined the popular Facebook-owned photo-sharing service.

The account launch coincides with the First Family's trip to Africa. She'll be capturing their journey with photos and videos using the hashtag she launched Wednesday through the also newly-created @whitehouse Instagram account, #FLOTUSinAfrica.

Not unlike her Twitter account, followers will know a photo is coming directly from the first lady herself if it includes "-mo" (her initials) in the caption. By mid-morning on Thursday, the account already had more than 9,000 followers.

Michelle's first post featured her and older daughter Malia, 14, posing along with a group of young girls who were welcoming them to Dakar, Senegal.

"My first instagram! So inspired and so impressed by these extraordinary young women. -mo #FLOTUSinAfrica," she wrote.

Always on top of the latest trends, Michelle's second post took advantage of Instagram's brand new video feature, and showed students doing a welcome dance for her.

"Students perform a welcome ceremony at MLK Middle School in Dakar. #FLOTUSinAfrica," the caption read.

A new video from the @Whitehouse account appears to be shot from the President's car as they drove through the streets of Dakar en route to the Presidential Palace.

"Dakar welcomes the President and First Lady on the way to their official welcome at the Presidential Palace. #ObamainAfrica, #FLOTUSinAfrica," the caption said.

The First Family will dine with President Macky Sall of Senegal Thursday night before heading to South Africa on Saturday. This is President Obama's second trip to Africa since he took office in 2009. You can read about the family's itinerary through Senegal, South Africa, and Tanzania, HERE.

An Instagram account for President Obama exists and was run by his 2012 campaign staff, but has been inactive since his re-election in November.
