The Nov. 10 movie, released to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Kennedy's assassination, "is a history story, but it's really a thriller," says screenwriter Kelly Masterson, who based the script on the bestselling book of the same name by Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard.
In the trailer, we get glimpses of Kennedy in the Oval Office with John-John, and with Jackie and his brother Bobby; we see Oswald meet wife Marina, Marina holding their baby, and the two fighting; and we see Oswald loading a gun at the Texas Book Depository, and later being taken to jail.
"There's something about the building of the tension mixed with these really beautiful, quiet human moments that do almost make you think something else could happen," says Goodwin. Adds Trachtenberg, who is nearly unrecognizable as Marina, "Marina was this unknown victim. She was a just girl who loved a man, and the man did something terrible. There's this parallel between [Jackie and Marina] ... at the end of the day, you're still a heartbroken woman."
As for JFK and LHO, Rothhaar says, the movie "delves into the personal lives of JFK and Oswald. Especially with Oswald's character, it's something you don’t get to see a lot of ... we've always seen Lee as a two-dimensional villain. But he was a human being. He wanted somebody to take notice of him." Says Masterson, "We know the history, but we don’t know the humanity of the story."
Lowe, who looks strikingly like the 35th president in the film, says, "I think for key figures, the key is inhabitation, not imitation. To be able to embody his story on the 50th anniversary of his death was an exciting, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."
