'Orphan Black' Postmortem: Kira's Father Is Almost Certainly Hiding Something

Did you see that little twist coming, Clone Club?

[Spoiler alert: If you haven't seen "Orphan Black" Season 2, Episode 3, "Mingling Its Own Nature With It," do not keep reading.]

The mysterious Cal (played by muti-tasking Michiel Huisman) was finally introduced, and lo and behold, he's not just some guy from Sarah's (Tatiana Maslany) past — he's Kira's father!

"We always knew we wanted to meet Kira's father; we were just looking for an interesting way to do it," co-creator Graeme Manson told Yahoo TV. "And in our desire to take Sarah on the road, get her out of the city, and put her on the run with Felix and her daughter, there's a couple things in there… we wanted to eventually drive a wedge between Felix and Sarah, and it seemed like meeting Cal, Kira's father, out of the blue was a great way to do that. It was a big surprise for the audience that opens up a lot of drama for Sarah and for Kira, but also she kept this secret from Felix, her one big confidante. Obviously, he's going to get pissed off at that."

Co-creator John Fawcett gave us some more insight into how the specifics of Cal's reveal came about. "In terms of the character of Cal, when Graeme and I were mapping out Season 2, we were up in Northern B.C., British Columbia, Canada — Graeme's got a very off-the-grid cabin there, and that's where we holed up for a good week. It's literally difficult getting texts or emails, his place is run on solar power… it's just a really interesting, isolated setting to meet this new character. So being at that cabin, I think, kind of inspired the character of Cal."

And then he ended that thought with something totally cryptic: "When you meet someone like that, you go, 'Why are you living out here like this? Is this by choice?' He could be hiding out. You never know."

Cue the ominous "Orphan Black" music.
