5 Most Ridiculous Moments From Lifetime’s ‘The Unauthorized Beverly Hills 90210 Story’

Lifetime’s “Unauthorized” series of movies aren’t known for their seriousness, and “The Unauthorized Beverly Hills 90210 Story” is no different.

The movie, which purports to document the behind-the-scenes drama between the cast of the 90’s teen series has no shortage of ridiculous moments.

“It’s not like everyone is exposing us to the fact that there is some silliness and some winks in these films,” the network’s senior vice president of original movies Tanya Lopez told TheWrap in an interview in August.

In celebration of that attitude, TheWrap has rounded up five of the most ridiculous moments from the TV movie below:

The cast learns about sex

According to the movie, the “90210” cast had some trouble keeping their hormones in check during filming, requiring a lesson from the show’s lawyers about what is appropriate when shooting a sex scene.

“Above the waist, off the breasts,” they all repeat after a long conversation discussing where exactly the breasts begin and end by FCC standards.

“90210” a pioneer in sex on TV

After receiving criticism from the network for Brenda’s cavalier attitude about losing her virginity, “90210” creator Darren Star takes heat from network representatives demanding that the character show more remorse and shame when the show returns from hiatus.

But Star won’t hear it. In a secretive bathroom conversation with producer Aaron Spelling, he argues that the show is about telling the “truth” of the teenage experience, and it would be disingenuous to kowtow to network demands.

“They’re about to become The Beatles”

When the show sees a spike in ratings, Spelling warns that the cast is about to see a similar spike in popularity: “Remember a few months ago when they were really popular? Well they’re about to become The Beatles,” he says.

What follows is a montage of the cast being mobbed by adoring fans and being rushed out of restaurants because of the horde of teenagers blocking the entrance. Even Ronald Reagan can’t avoid approaching Luke Perry and Jason Priestly to express his admiration.

Shannen Doherty, brawler

Doherty’s combative attitude is front and center in the film, with the actress getting into physical altercations with both her co-star Jennie Garth, and some random nightclub patrons (Doherty was cited for misdemeanor battery in a 1992 nightclub fight with Bonita Money).

“Sharknado”

Ian Ziering‘s biggest acting role since the conclusion of “Beverly Hills, 90210” in 2000 has been in Syfy’s “Sharknado” franchise, a fact the movie did not overlook.

“You’re like a shark. You’re like a tornado. You’re like a mixture between a shark and a tornado,” Ziering tells Doherty after her feud with Garth comes to blows. “That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard,” she responds.
