‘American Idol’ Season 12 recap: San Antonio, Long Beach auditions prove size doesn’t matter

Everything may be bigger in Texas, but this week on "American Idol," size didn't matter. Just ask Matheus Fernandes, who stands 4'9" and belted out "A Change Is Gonna Come" with his really big voice.

Matheus's audition brought an inspirational end to the auditions in San Antonio and Long Beach, as he jokingly asked, "Is there a height limit on the show?" (Not exactly a reality shows newbie, eagle-eyed viewers may remember this kid from Season 1 of "The Glee Project," when he flashed his six-pack.)

This week also brought a temporary ceasefire in the Nicki Minaj/Mariah Carey war, which left a lot more time to showcase the talent.

In addition to Matheus, check out five more hopefuls that made a big impression on the judges this week.

Papa Peachez: This super quirky 19-year-old boasted that he's "really just a big black woman trapped in a little boy's body," and then had the nerve to sing an original -- about himself! The judges' were divided, but Nicki petitioned heavily for him and convinced Randy Jackson to change his mind and put him through. Meanwhile, Keith Urban channeled Madonna and had fun with this quirky contestant's name: "Papa don't peach," he sang.

Micah Johnson: This 24-year old suffers from a permanent speech impediment following nerve damage from a tonsillectomy, but when he sings, it all goes away. Sure, we've seen stories like before, but never with the Zac Brown Band's "Chicken Fried" as the background noise.

Cristabel Clack: This 29-year-old worship leader has one last shot to make it as an "Idol" -- she's at the top end of the age range -- so luckily her rendition of Alicia Keys's "If I Ain't Got You" was mind-blowing. "It's obvious that you're a real singer," Mariah said. "You just sang the song how you felt it. I know you; I get you; I love you."

Matt Farmer: This 26-year-old Iraq war vet has it all: The looks, the back story (he suffered a traumatic brain injury in Iraq and has a tattoo memorial on his arm), and the voice. He sang the heck out of Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come." There's only one thing this Farmer needs to guarantee an "Idol" victory: A guitar to keep in line with the show's past five winners.

Sanni M'mairura: Is America ready for a black Justin Bieber? We say yes! This 16-year-old had the confidence of a seasoned pro or at least that of a teen YouTube sensation. He sang Michael Jackson's "Who's Loving You" and flashed his pretty boy smile as the judges praised him.

With all of this talent (there was plenty more where that came from; in Long Beach alone, 49 hopefuls got golden tickets to Hollywood), we won't even get into the dud duo with a ton of 'tude and the purple-haired punker who screamed Adele's "Set Fire to the Rain" as she flipped America the bird.

"American Idol" Season 12 airs on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8 PM ET on FOX.
