Bates Motel Taps Freddie Highmore to Play Norman, Also Casts the Problem Child's Brother

Former child actor Freddie Highmore is checking into A&E’s Bates Motel.

The Finding Neverland and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory star has nabbed the coveted role of Norman Bates in the cabler’s buzzy Psycho prequel, TV Guide Magazine reports.

UPDATE: Executive producer Carlton Cuse (Lost) later announced on Twitter that Max Thieriot (The Pacifier) has been cast as Norma Bates’ other son, Dylan, adding: “Max is a phenomenal, smart and magnetic actor.”

From executive producers Cuse and Kerry Ehrin (Friday Night Lights, Parenthood), Bates Motel (slated to bow in 2013) is a contemporary look into Norman’s formative years, which includes his storied relationship with his mother, to be played by the previously cast Vera Farmiga. The glimpse into their backstory will, of course, reveal how the someday serial killer came to be.
