"Smallville" has been on the air for almost ten amazing years with its tenth season being its last. During this time there have been some pretty amazing guest stars that have added to the show's allure. There, of course, has been some guests that have shined more than others. Here are five of the best male guest stars during the series duration:

#1: Christopher Reeve

Christopher Reeve tops the list of the best male guest stars on "Smallville." He is well known for starring in the "Superman" movies that came out in the late '70s/early '80s, so it was only fitting that the "Smallville" producers had the Superman icon as a guest star on the series. His role was that of Dr. Swann, the person who gives Clark Kent information on where Clark came from and how to use his powers.

#2: James Marsters

James Marsters, most well known for his role as Spike on "Buffy The Vampire Slayer," portrayed Dr. Milton Fine aka the alien villain Brainiac in several episodes in the show's fifth season and a couple of other appearances in later seasons. He acted with flair and was very believable as a professor who turned out to be an alien bad guy. His last appearance was in Season 10 and his villain days were over as he'd been reprogrammed in the future and actually came to help Clark see how things could be in the future.

#3: Dean Cain

Dean Cain is another Superman veteran. He had the winning role himself on the '90s series "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman." On "Smallville," Dean had the role of Dr. Curtis Knox, an immortal mad man who wanted to restore life to his true love and was going to have Chloe Sullivan help him do it. Dean was very creepy in the episode, acting like a gentleman in public and a true lunatic in his own little "torture" chamber as he dissected women for their body parts. Dean as Dr. Knox seemed polite even as he spoke with Chloe as he picked up his instruments of terror to cut into her in the name of love.

#4: Michael Shanks

Michael Shanks is no stranger to supernatural type shows. Most know him as Dr. Daniel Jackson in the series "Stargate SG1," but in Season 9 and 10 of "Smallville," he had a couple of guest appearances as Hawkman. Hawkman was the former leader of the Justice Society of America. It had become defunct but the remaining members are pulled back into their duties to help Clark and the gang find the killer that wants members of the Justice Society dead. Michael Shanks portrayed Hawkman beautifully as a man who didn't want to get dragged back in, who had lost his love and his drive.

#5: Brian Austin Green

Now those of you that remember Brian Austin Green from his "Beverly Hills 90210" days may call me crazy for putting him on a best guest star list but it is rightly deserved. Green has shed those teen angst days and has stepped into being an actor in his own right. Green was given the role of John Corben/Metallo. He started out as human, was in a terrible accident that lost the life of someone he loved, and then awakened as some sort of freaky experiment. Understandably, he went out of his mind. Clark's true love Lois Lane got caught in the crossfire as she tried to help him. Metallo made another appearance later on when he had become reformed. He had feelings for our dear Lois but she gently refused him as she had feelings for Clark.
