Box Office: The Martian Soars to No. 1

The Martian posted out-of-this-world earnings for its first weekend in theaters, raking in $55 million and easily taking the No. 1 spot at the box office, according to Box Office Mojo.

The Matt Damon space odyssey (his second-highest opening ever, behind The Bourne Ultimatum) displaced Hotel Transylvania, which dropped a spot to second place with $33 million.

After opening wide, Sicario rose from 10th place to No. 3 with $12 million, followed by The Intern, which took in $11.6 million.

In fifth place was Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials with $7.6 million.

Black Mass dropped a spot to No. 6 with $5.9 million, edging out Everest's $5.5 million earnings.

Rounding out the Top 10 were The Visit (No. 8, $3.9 million), War Room (No. 9, $2.8 million) and The Perfect Guy (No. 10, $2.4 million).
