Kyle Jean-Baptiste, who recently made his Broadway debut in Les Miserables, died Friday night at the age of 21, Broadway World reports. The actor passed away after accidentally falling off his mother's fire escape.

Jean-Baptiste made history earlier this summer when he became the youngest actor and the first black actor to play the role of Jean Valjean on Broadway.

"The entire LES MISERABLES family is shocked and devastated by the sudden and tragic loss of Kyle, a remarkable young talent and tremendous person who made magic - and history - in his Broadway debut," the theater company said in a statement. "We send our deepest condolences to his family and ask that you respect their privacy in this unimaginably difficult time,"
