Bunheads Scoop: Sutton Foster Previews the Condom Shocker that Sets Paradise Ablaze

Hard to say what burns hotter in Monday’s Bunheads (ABC Family, 9/8c): the fire on the edge of town that drives refugees to take shelter at the dance school or the teen libidos that set the stage for someone dropping a condom in the locker area.

Is one of Michelle’s ballerinas getting her toeshoes unlaced? And could it happen under Michelle’s watch?!

Not if the Vegas transplant has anything to say about it. But first, a little set-up from star Sutton Foster. “I’m basically in charge of the studio,” she tells TVLine, adding that the blaze in Paradise – plus a double-shot of guilt trip from Bash the barista (played by returning guest star Sean Gunn) – forces her to open the school to those driven from their homes.

In the middle of dealing with Paradise’s displaced, Michelle can’t believe it when “I find a condom in the locker area, and I don’t know whose it is,” Foster says. Though you might think the laid-back dancer would be cool with the situation, she quickly gets all Black Swan about it.

“I have a real problem with all of the girls and the boys sharing the same sleeping area,” Foster previews.

As to the likelihood of which teen pair is engaging in a horizontal pas de deux, it’s anyone’s guess. Sasha and Roman get closer during the episode, Ginny can’t tear herself away from Frankie, Boo finds herself an unwilling vertex on an accidental love triangle and Melanie can’t shake Dez’s stalker-like attention.

The episode’s adult love story is a little more tame, but no less upsetting to Mrs. Hubbell Flowers. Her visiting best friend Talia has agreed to marry the steak-dinner-loving, hummus-protective Rick – and Truly is her maid of honor!

Michelle’s absence from the wedding party might be because she doesn’t approve of the bride’s decision not to accept a part in a touring company of Rock of Ages so she can settle down with Rick.

“She turns it down to get married, and I don’t understand that – because if it were me, I would probably jump at that opportunity, even with all of this,” Foster says. “So she’s got a friend who’s basically giving it all up for a 65-year-old guy who will provide her with stability and a life that she wants.”

Foster concedes that Michelle’s anger might stem from her own issues with matrimony and companionship. (Remember, this is a woman who had to once compared her dating self to Godzilla and needed several rounds of drinks before she could say “I do.”)

“It’s the pull of career vs. family and stability,” Foster says, “that thing that Michelle is constantly battling with.”
