Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring will open Un Certain Regard at the 66th Cannes Film Festival, the organization announced on its Twitter ahead of Thursday morning’s press conference. The film had been widely anticipated to be part of the lineup.
The Oscar-winner has graced the Croisette before, with her divisive Marie Antoinette film premiering at the festival in 2006.
The Bling Ring, starring Emma Watson and Taissa Farmiga, tells the true-life tale of celebrity-obsessed teens that broke into Hollywood homes in an effort to emulate their favorite stars from 2008 through 2009.
Un Certain Regard runs parallel to the main selections, with a separate winner announced during the final day of the festival. The jury is separate, and often consists of other artists. This year’s main jury will be presided over by Steven Spielberg, and the short film jury will be headed by Palme d’Or winner Jane Campion.
President Gilles Jacob and artistic director Thierry Fremaux will announce the remaining official selections Thursday morning in a Paris.
