CBS Re-Piloting ‘The McCarthys’ As Multi-Camera Comedy

CBS has ordered a new pilot for Irish-American family comedy The McCarthys, which will be converted from a single-camera to multi-camera. Talks are underway with cast members about joining the new pilot. Produced by Sony TV and Will Gluck’s Olive Bridge Entertainment, The McCarthys revolves around a big Irish Catholic, sports-crazed Boston clan and the gay son whose greatest sin is not his sexuality but his desire to spend less time with his family. The project, written/co-executive produced by Brian Gallivan, was among the pilots in serious consideration for a series pickup at CBS this season, said to be one of the strongest on the comedy side at the network in years.

CBS already picked up more new comedy series for next season than it has in more than two decades, six. In addition to The McCarthys, which is getting another shot, CBS also is in talks with Sony TV about retooling the Jim Gaffigan/Peter Tolan single-camera comedy pilot. CBS has good track record in re-piloting comedies. The Big Bang Theory started off with a pass for the original pilot, but the reworked second pilot spawned the blockbuster series. Meanwhile, Rebel Wilson’s half-hour pilot Super Fun Night underwent successful format change this past season from a multi-cam pilot that didn’t make the cut at CBS to a single-camera one that landed the post-Modern Family slot on ABC. The original McCarthys pilots starred Jack McGee, Jacki Weaver, Jake Lacy, Joey McIntyre, Jessica Chaffin, Jimmy Dunn. Gluck is exec producing; Richie Schwartz co-exec producing.
