"The Closer" Starring Kyra Sedgwick a Crime Drama and Escapist Fun

TNT's The Closer starring Kyra Sedgwick, is one of my favorite television shows. Sedgwick won an Emmy Award in 2010 for her portrayal of LAPD Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson. While Sedgwick is the centerpiece of The Closer, the show has a fine ensemble cast including Jon Tenney, J.K. Simmons, Corey Reynolds, G.W. Bailey, Tony Denison, Raymond Cruz,Michael Paul Chan, Robert Gossett and Phillip P. Keene.

I enjoy The Closer because it is part crime drama and part escapist fun. The show takes the viewer inside the world of the Major Crimes Division of the LAPD.

The Closer is a crime drama and features a different case every week. Set amid the glitz and glamor of Los Angeles, the locations and the characters are attractive, providing contrast to some very ugly crimes and criminals.

The Closer is more than a crime drama, it shows the faults and foibles of the main character. When Brenda Leigh Johnson (Kyra Sedgwick) becomes focused upon a case, she forgets the people around her. She can be inconsiderate and self-absorbed, but she also cares deeply about people. In other words, she is a flawed character and very human. Her flaws endear her to the audience.

The Deputy Chief has an amazing talent to get criminals to trust her and confess, hence the name, The Closer. Her skillful interrogation skills gain the admiration of the staff and coworkers.

The Closer is a show that seems to get better with time. The series started when Brenda Johnson (Kyra Sedgwick) was brought in from the outside to take charge of a LAPD department by her former lover Assistant Police Chief Will Pope (J.K. Simmons). The staff of the department resented their new boss, but over the course of several episodes she won them over. Over the seasons Brenda Johnson has fallen in love with FBI agent Fritz Howard (Jon Tenney), gotten married, had family conflicts and been up for a promotion that she lost.

The character is likable because she can be related to by people who have had struggles in life and who can admit they are not perfect. Through it all, the series maintains a sense of quirkiness and fun. For example, Brenda has a weakness for sweets and often turns to chocolate to get through emotional turmoil. Many people can relate to hiding at their desk with a candy bar for comfort.

It has been fun watching the characters in the department mesh and learn to work as an team. When Brenda was up for a promotion to Chief of Police, I was hoping she would get the promotion, but wondered what would happen to the dynamics of the police squad. The ensemble cast of The Closer has been nominated for a SAG Award.

The Closer aired its summer season finale on September 13, 2010. The series will return with new episodes in December, 2010. The Closer airs on TNT cable television.
