Dance Romance: 5 ‘Dancing With the Stars’ Real Life Couples

On ABC's "Dancing With the Stars," it's sometimes a fine line between a romance and a showmance.

Case in point: This week's super steamy rumba had "Extra" host Maria Menounos and her pro partner Derek Hough in a near lip lock, leaving all of Twitterverse left to ponder whether the couple kissed or not, and if they're a real life couple.

Since Menounos has been photographed often with boyfriend Kevin Undergaro (you can see the evidence here), it's safe to say she's not dating Derek.

In fact, Hough told Zap 2 It he doesn't want to be "that guy." He also revealed that that his near-kiss with Menounos was spontaneous.

"It was a moment thing," he said. "I got all these twitters saying you had better do a sexy rumba so I said all right. Well we were in it, she arched her back and put her head back and I was like, okay. I was just kissing her chin."

Of course, "DWTS" has a history of relationship rumors.

Back in Season 10 there was Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Erin Andrews, who had a bickering flirtation going on. Ditto for Cheryl Burke and Chad Ochocinco; the pro football player actually gave his "DWTS" partner a diamond ring as a "thank you" for the dance lessons.

But amid all of the faux-mances, there have been some real life romances on "DWTS."

Mario Lopez and Karina Smirnoff

"Extra" host Mario Lopez and pro Karina Smirnoff made it to second place on the third season of "Dancing With the Stars" -- and they also made a go of a relationship. After their "DWTS" dances ended, they continued dating for nearly two years, but in 2008 they split for good. A spokesperson told People that "the relationship wasn't heading in the right direction."

Shannon Elizabeth and Derek Hough

Back in Season 6, Derek Hough was partnered with "American Pie" star Shannon Elizabeth, and their chemistry on the dance floor quickly blossomed into a bonafide relationship. According to "Access Hollywood," they dated for over a year before the Twitter-happy Hough broke the news online: "Hi everyone, we wanted you all to know directly from us, that Shannon & I have decided to end our relationship as boyfriend & girlfriend."

Julianne Hough and Chuck Wicks

In a "DWTS" first, two-time mirror ball winner Julianne Hough partnered with her real-life boyfriend on Season 8 of the show. But six months after their "DWTS" elimination, they broke up. According to E Online, a source said the split was mutual: "They both needed some time apart."

Sabrina Bryan and Mark Ballas

Mark Ballas danced with pop singer Sabrina Bryan on Season 5 of "DWTS," and while their week six cut was shocking, their off-screen romance was not. Shortly after their October 2007 elimination from the show, the Cheetah Girl told TV Guide, "We've been so focused on the competition. But now that that has died down, we'll see where it goes." Apparently it didn't go far. According to TV Fanatic, by May 2008 they had split, reportedly due to Bryan's busy schedule.

Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Karina Smirnoff

The Ukrainian pro dancers were friends first, but their "DWTS" collaborations had them collaborating off screen, as well. This hot couple even got engaged! But the relationship ended over the issue of starting a family. (Maks was reportedly ready for kids; Karina was not.) According to a People source: "Maks was ready to start a family and have children with Karina, and he came to realize that wasn't really what she wanted. He's just heartbroken things didn't work out. He'll always respect Karina."

"Dancing With the Stars" Season 14 airs on Monday and Tuesday night on ABC.
