‘Dexter’ Season 8 guest stars: Who they’ll play (and who fans wish they were playing)

Three important guest roles have been cast for the eighth season of "Dexter." While details about these important characters are scarce, fans already have some ideas about how the characters will fit into the world of the show. But based on these guest stars' talent, many fans think that the character descriptions are pretty boring compared to what these gifted actors are capable of.

Here's a rundown of three guest stars set to appear in "Dexter" Season 8 -- about the roles they will actually be playing, as well as a "wish list" for what these actors should really be doing on the show.

Charlotte Rampling

Reportedly playing:

"A neuro-psychiatrist who specializes in working with young psychopaths and profiling criminals in unorthodox ways." Perhaps she's going to be treating young Harrison?

She should be playing: The Big Bad. Charlotte Rampling is a staggeringly talented British actress with plenty of gravitas, and she would be an excellent choice for a cerebral, intimidating villain.

Better still, she ought to be playing a law enforcement official. With his enemies circling around him, the best thing that Season 8 could do to Dexter Morgan is surround him with tons of people who are on the brink of discovering his secret. How great would it be to have Rampling play a British law enforcement official investigating the death of Lila Tournay/West? Hey, if you have a British cast member, why not make the most of it?

Sean Patrick Flanery

Reportedly playing:

Jacob Elroy, "the ex-cop owner of a private investigation company in Miami." Either someone's investigating Dexter on the down-low (perhaps Matthews?), or Dexter is trying to track someone else down (maybe Hannah?).

He should be playing:

Half of a vigilante hit squad, a la "Boondock Saints." It would be a great homage to his previous work, and it would tie in thematically with Dexter Morgan's own vigilante lifestyle, forcing Dex to re-examine his motivations, methods, and madness.

Nick Gomez

Reportedly playing:

A hit man named Javier Guzman (aka El Sapo) who will become frustrated when Deb comes between him and a person he's been paid to kill.

He should be playing: Anything but a hitman. Not only is it typecasting for Gomez, but another Latin hitman is kind of old hat for "Dexter" at this point. Haven't we covered this ground with "Latin killer" characters like Norberto Cervantes, Little Chino, Santos Jimenez, and the Fuentes brothers? Sure, "Dexter" is set in Miami, but after seven seasons, it feels like a disproportionate amount of killers and bad guys end up being Latino.
