Disney-ABC Calls for 'Day of Giving' for Sandy Victims
Disney/ABC Television Group will hold a "Day of Giving" Monday to encourage viewers to donate money to Hurricane Sandy relief.
The announcement came after Disney CEO and chairman Robert A. Iger announced a $2 million donation from the company for relief and rebuilding efforts. NBC, meanwhile, is hosting a telethon Friday night featuring New Jersey's Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi and New York's Billy Joel, among others. Their states were hard-hit by the storm.
ABC's call for charity Monday will begin with "Good Morning America" at 8 a.m., when the anchors, reporters and staff will encourage viewers to give to the American Red Cross. The message will continue with "LIVE with Kelly and Michael," The View," "The Chew," Katie," local news broadcasts, and "World News with Diane Sawyer."
In primetime, "Dancing with the Stars" plans to dedicate sections of the live show to the day's theme. "Nightline" and "Jimmy Kimmel Live" will also spread the word.
Kimmel, which is shooting in Brooklyn, N.Y., this week and had to cancel Monday's taping because of the storm, will conclude the "Day of Giving" with special messages and calls to action.
"The effects of Hurricane Sandy have impacted millions of people across the entire North East, including many of our co-workers, friends and families," said Anne Sweeney, co-chair of Disney Media Networks and president of Disney-ABC Television Group. "This unprecedented devastation demanded an unprecedented response, so our team came up with the 'Day of Giving.'"
Disney-owned ESPN, meanwhile, will run public service announcements during its coverage of the The New York City Marathon on Sunday and Monday Night Football.
