'About Face' on 'The View': Supermodels thought water would make them fat!

Before the Victoria's Secret fashion extravaganzas, Tyra Banks' 'smizing,' Naomi Campbell's phone throwing antics, and Kate Moss' heroin chic, there was a trend-setting cadre of supermodels. These women were pioneering beauties who set the standards on trading on one's looks. HBO examines the phenomenon of these genetically gifted women in a new documentary, "About Face: Supermodels Then and Now."

This morning, several household faces with boldfaced names dropped by "The View" to promote the new film. Beverly Johnson, Carol Alt, Kim Alexis, and China Machado talked about being gorgeous, aging, the industry, and body image. Joy Behar, who often jokes about her own looks, fired the majority of questions at the bevy of beauties.

Other models featured in the film include Christie Brinkley, Cheryl Tiegs, Paulina Porizkova, Isabella Rossellini, Pat Cleveland, Carmen Dell'Orefice, Jerry Hall, Bethann Hardison, Marisa Berenson, Karen Bjornson, and Lisa Taylor.

Many model fans are familiar with legendary star faces like Christy Turlington and Linda Evangelista, who made the infamous "We don't get out of bed for less than $10,000 a day" comment. However, some of the divine faces in the film may be unfamiliar to younger viewers.

Veteran Supermodels: Who's Who

Beverly

Beverly Johnson was the first black woman on the cover of Vogue Magazine. She also graced the covers of mags like Cosmopolitan and Harper's Bazaar. This was groundbreaking and pioneering for an African-American model. It still is. Beverly considers herself a model-prenur and recently starred in a reality show with her model daughter, Anansa Sims, for Oprah Winfrey's OWN Network. The show is called "Beverly's Full House."

China

China Machado is still modeling at 82-years-old. She told the 'View' co-hosts that she began as a "house model" for the House of Givenchy. She explained that in 1954, she only made 100 a month. Richard Avedon once suggested that she was "probably the most beautiful woman in the world." Machado undoubtedly set the stage for non-Caucasian models.

Carol

Carol Alt intimately knows the perils of unhealthy eating. She and Beverly indicated on "The View" that they used to be afraid to drink water because they thought it would make them fat! Now, Alt is an advocate of healthy eating and living. Her cookbook, "Easy, Sexy, Raw," teaches readers how to eat naturally for optimum wellness.

"About Face" will air on HBO on July 30th. Check your local listings for exact times.
