First Female MLB Playoff Analyst Jessica Mendoza Answers Sexist Backlash: ‘He Came After Me Because I Was a Woman’ (Video)

Jessica Mendoza made history on Tuesday as the first woman to call a Major League Baseball playoff game on television.

Sexist backlash was immediate as Atlanta sports radio host Mike Bell fired off a series of tweets mocking Mendoza, referencing her breasts while belittling the notion of a woman having the necessary baseball acumen to call a professional game on TV.

He also tweeted, “Really? A women’s softball slugger as guest analyst on MLB Wildcard Game? Once again ESPN too frigging cute for their own good.” The radio host was suspended for two weeks by 92.9 The Game and has apologized.

“Any time there is a change, there’s normally a lot of resistance,” Mendoza said on “Good Morning America” on Thursday. “I think the [thing I was most] excited about was the aftermath and how much support there really was.”

Of Bell’s tweets, Mendoza said she hasn’t even looked at them.

“Just before I was going to click on it, I thought, you know, ‘Why?’ Why even give it the attention? I didn’t even want to open it, I’ve actually yet to read it.”

When asked by host Amy Robach if she accepted his apology, Mendoza said, “I accept his apology. To me, it really was about the fact that he came after me because I was a woman.”

Mendoza concluded by saying that things need to advance to the point at which gender has no importance in society or media.

“Yes, I am a female, but I want it to get to the point where, let’s think about what I am saying, what I am doing, and not so much the sex that I am. I want to get to a point when we hear a female voice on NBA, NFL or just anything in men’s sports, and it is like, ‘Sweet, she’s doing a good job.'”
