‘Game of Thrones’ Breaks World Record With Season 5 Premiere Mega-Simulcast

“Game of Thrones” has notched another record.

HBO’s swords-and-dragons drama, which in 2012 earned the dubious distinction of becoming the year’s most-pirated television show, has now racked up another honor — and this one is actually welcomed.

The Season 5 premiere of “Game of Thrones” has earned the distinction of becoming the largest TV drama simulcast, according to Guinness World Records.

The record is actually related to the series’ most-pirated status. In an effort to thwart the rampant piracy of the series, the Season 5 premiere was broadcast in 173 countries simultaneously.

The previous record-holder was the CBS procedural “CSI,” which had set the record two weeks earlier with a 171-country simulcast.
