‘Game of Thrones’ Editor Mauled to Death by Lion in South Africa

Katherine Chappell, a special effects editor working on HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” died in Johannesburg after being mauled by a lion at a safari park on Monday.

Chappell was visiting South Africa in an effort to protect wildlife from poachers. While visiting the city’s Lion Park, a lion lunged at Chappell through the open window of her vehicle. Other passengers in the car were injured, while Chappell succumbed to her wounds.

In addition to her work on “Game of Thrones,” Chappell also performed special effects work on blockbusters like “Godzilla” and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”

According to her IMDB page, Chappell also wrote, produced and directed several of her own short films, such as 2008’s “Grim Determination.”

Chappell’s sister Jennifer posted a tribute to her on her Facebook page, published by The Daily Mail. “Katie was a brilliant, kind, adventurous and high-spirited woman. Her energy and passion could not be contained by mere continents or oceans. She was very much loved and shared her love for life with those she met.”
