"The Real Housewives of New Jersey" came back with a natural disaster this seson. Hurricane Sandy is the new b---- in town and trauma didn't inspire Melissa Gorga and Teresa Giudice to make peace. Things are bad between the sisters-in-law, as in can't text-about-a-playdate-for-the-princesses-without-bringing-the-nasty.
We talked to Gorga about the battles of Season 5 as well as the battles unfolding recently in the press, namely, Round 457 of Giudice versus Gorga, wherein Giudice told Andy Cohen that Gorga wrote her song "On Display" about Giudice.
"New Normal" actress and "Housewife of Atlanta" NeNe Leakes got in on the action too, telling Andy that Gorga should "take a seat" and let the veteran housewives dominate. Watch here, if you're brave:
Gorga says she and her friend "Housewife of Beverly Hills" Brandi Glanville exchanged some omigod texts about the NeNe sitdown. But fortunately, it's pretty much all bile under the bridge. "I did text NeNe after I saw that, to be honest with you," Gorga confided. "And I said, 'Hey, what's up?' And she was like 'Hey, you know I love you.' So it's fine. She was sticking up for the veterans and I heard she's got something going on with her family, so maybe she felt what Teresa felt. Who knows? I love NeNe. I was like, what are you doing to me? And she was like, 'I love you, you know I love you.' I can't say anything bad about her. NeNe and I have spent weekends together and are on great terms."
Gorga says they didn't talk about "The New Normal" being canceled. "She is very lucky to have had that opportunity," Gorga said. "And now she's gonna have [her own] spinoff on Bravo. NeNe's done really well with capitalizing on this show."
Here's the rest of our gabbing with Gorga:
You just celebrated a birthday with Teresa.
Yes, I did. It was good. We went to dinner at STK. We're trying really hard to put everything in the past and let go. It wasn't easy to get here. You'll see a lot of that in Season 5, but we're here now. We are family. She invited us to go so we said, "Of course."
Did you talk about "On Display"?
She must really think that's true, and I say it when I'm asked and I'll say it to her face: It's not true. And it's crazy to think that. At the end of the day, this is not just a girlfriend. This is my husband's only sister. This is not a girlfriend where I can say, "Take a hike. You're annoying. Get out of here." So at the end of the day you have to let a lot more slide than you would if this was only your girlfriend. It is what it is. Bravo would have a major problem if she was my friend. I would be like, "Sorry guys, I'm not even going near this person."
Your husband says his family calls you the devil. How does that make you feel?
Well, he didn't finish his sentence. What he meant was Teresa makes them think that I'm the devil. She was telling his parents things about me that aren't true and trying to make them think that I'm the devil. He takes it a lot more personally than I do. My in-laws and I get along really well, actually. We take them out to dinner. We see them for dinner. We're with them at least once a week for dinner, and they have never complained about me to me or to my husband. I did ask my mother-in-law, I was like,"'Mum, do you have any problems with me? Is there anything I have done to hurt you or the family?" And she looked me right in the eye and said, "Nope, you've never done anything wrong to any of us." And I said, "OK."
Is that exchange on camera?
No, you won't see that. I try not to do a lot with my in-laws on camera. I went to visit my father-in-law in the hospital a couple of times during filming and I wouldn't allow the cameras to go with me because I didn't want to put him on display like that.
There's your song, "On Display."
I feel like there are so many reasons you can be on display: when you start a job, when you enter a family, when you're on a reality show. Not in any part of my mind did I say, "Let me write a song about my sister-in-law that I don't get along with." That wouldn't be mine. I wrote it about being on a reality TV show. The word paparazzi just happened to fit in really good with the rhythm, so we just threw it in there! It's kind of magical how it gets turned around.
Listen to "On Display":
I hold my tongue. Both sides are trying. Someone can only take so much. I'm trying again. I know that I have never tried to hurt her or her marriage or her kids, so I can put my head on my pillow at night.
Do you think people are jealous of you?
You know, I think that everyone that comes at me this season is either not married or in an unhappy marriage. So you tell me. Misery loves company.
One thing that has always been very easy for me is my marriage. Joe and I are very lucky. We are madly in love. We respect each other and we know how to do it right. We keep it young and fresh, so for everyone to come at me on my strongest link and try to tear that down, that was very hard for me. That's where I shine. That's what I'm writing a book about. People saw that and they came for my marriage. You'll never be able to break my marriage because it's extremely strong and only the strong survive on these reality shows.
On a happy note, we love Andy Cohen. What's it like to sit down with him?
Andy is funny. He's got this funny way of blinking his eyes and moving his head. He talks without talking. He's cute. You can't get mad at him. And listen, he's got how many housewives that he has to deal with? At the end of the day he's got to ask the questions. It's what Bravo is. He doesn't take sides. He does his little head tilt and that's it.
If you could spend a week in any other "Housewives" town where would it be and why?
Definitely Beverly Hills. I love to watch all of them but "Beverly Hills" is my favorite. I love Brandi. Brandi and I have become close friends. I would love to go there.
If the Countess wanted to collaborate musically with you, would you go for that?
Countess Luanne from "New York."
It's funny you ask me that... I mean, I don't know. Right now I'm not into collaborating with any other housewives, but maybe one day. You never know.
What's your favorite episode this season?
You are going to love when we are up on the high-wire. It's funny. It's emotional. It was pretty insane. You're going to cry and laugh.
