Now “The View” is taking a look at rebuilding.

After losing longtime co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck last week and with both Joy Behar and creator Barbara Walters set to depart in coming weeks (Behar) and in 2014 (Walters), the only thing that has seemed stable about the ABC talker in recent times is the instability of its on-air hosting circle.

On Monday, however, the network said comedienne and author Jenny McCarthy would join the gabfest in the fall, confirming several weeks of speculation. McCarthy has made 17 appearances on the talk show, seven of them as a co-host. Her first day on the job is slated to be Monday, September 9, the first day of the program’s 17th season. The hire shows the daytime skein in one of its regular construction periods, in which it rejiggers its on-air talent. “The View” has survived the departures of Meredith Vieria and Rosie O’Donnell, among others.

“Jenny will be a great addition to the show as we usher in an exciting new chapter for ‘The View,’” said Walters in a prepared statement. Walters serves as an executive producer for the show.

McCarthy had been working on a late-night VH-1 talk show, “The Jenny McCarthy Show,” as well as penning a blog and advice column, “Ask Jenny,” for her hometown paper, the Chicago Sun-Times, answering reader questions about love, sex, single parenting and fitness.  ”We let Jenny out of her talk deal to pursue this amazing opportunity at’The View,’” the Viacom cable network said in a statement, “and hope to have Jenny on our air in another way in the near future.”

McCarthy  rose to fame as a co-host on the MTV game show “Singled Out” and has appeared in roles on sitcoms including “Two and a Half Men” on CBS and a short-lived self-titled laffer that appeared on NBC. She has also sparked controversy for espousing the view that vaccines can help trigger autism, a view the medical community has derided as dangerous.
