Since "Pretty Little Liars" returned for its second season, the question of who killed Alison DiLaurentis (Sasha Pieterse) has become more confusing than ever. Throughout the show's run, many have been suspected. While some were dismissed, others are still placed firmly in the frame. Ian Thomas (Ryan Merriman) has been the prime suspect since the middle of Season 1, but there is some doubt as to whether or not he is the real culprit. In order to shed a little light on what could have happened, here is a look at some of the other people who could have been responsible for Ali's death.
Jason DiLaurentis (Drew Van Acker)
Why would Ali's own brother want her dead, you ask? Especially when he seemed so desperate to find her killer. While we don't know much about Jason, other than that he partied too much and used drugs, he has been acting very suspiciously since his return to Rosewood. In Season 2, Episode 3, a flashback showed Alison going to Spencer's to get away from the house because Jason's friends had taken it over. She threatened to call her grandma and tell her about Jason's wild ways, in an attempt to get him cut out of her will. To the average person, that might not be a reason to kill but we know that Alison could be manipulative and cruel. Perhaps he had simply had enough of her.
Melissa Hastings/Thomas (Torrey DeVitto)
Spencer's (Troian Bellisario) big sister Melissa has a gigantic question mark against her name. She has said and done several suspicious things, and also had a strong motive to want Alison dead. Melissa's fiance (and now husband) Ian was supposedly having a fling with the schoolgirl. There is nothing like a woman scorned, right? In an early episode of "Pretty Little Liars," Melissa was talking to Spencer about Alison, and Spencer revealed that she liked to play games. Melissa responded with the ominous words, "Maybe that's what got her killed." Another possible clue cropped up in Episode 22 of Season 1. When Ian tried to kill Spencer in the church, Spencer begged for her life with the plea that if he loved Melissa he wouldn't do it. Ian told her he was doing it because he loves her. Knowing that Spencer and her friends were trying to solve the crime, perhaps he figured he would be doing his wife a favor by silencing her. While all the evidence seems to point to Ian, having Melissa be the murderer would be a huge and surprising twist.
Garrett Reynolds (Yani Gellman)
Officer Reynolds is something of a mystery in this whole scenario, yet we know that he knew Ali and her friends because he grew up in their neighborhood. We also know that he has been lending a "trustworthy" ear to the girls while investigating the case. He is very close to Jenna Marshall (Tammin Sursok) and both are somehow aware of the mysterious recordings someone took of the pretty little liars through their bedroom windows. Garrett may not have a clear motive for murder, but nothing he has done has been clear yet. He is definitely one to watch.
It seems unlikely that Ali's killer would be an unknown character at this point in the story. It would make far more sense for it to be someone we are already familiar with. One thing is clear, this mystery is set to go on for a while longer. It will be very interesting to see who will be the next to be framed.
