Man Tackled Outside 'Today' After Slashing Himself With Knife (Video)

Guards outside NBC's "Today" tackled a man this morning who was wielding one or more knives and threatening to hurt himself. He apparently cut himself, but didn't harm anyone else.

The incident occurred as the show was taping at its Rockefeller Plaza headquarters in New York.

"There was an incident out on the plaza," Matt Lauer told viewers on the air. "A man out there attempted to harm himself with a knife. He did manage to cut himself. He was controlled by our security team out there. However, he did harm himself in some way, and so he's now being attended to by medical personnel."

Lauer said the man made clear that he did not want to hurt anyone else.

The New York Daily News

said he appeared to be in his 50s and was railing against the IRS. The paper said he used two knives, and cut each of his wrists.

"All secure on the plaza after a scary incident," Lauer later tweeted. "Thanks to our security team and the NYPD."

The incident was captured on cell phone photos and videos, including this video of the tackle by Twitter user @SirAnduck. He said the man wielded what appeared to be "a box cutter."

In a photo (above) by @SirAnduck, the man is seen pinned to the ground outside the studio, apparently in a pool of blood.
