NBC Not Going Forward With Potential ‘Office’ Spinoff ‘The Farm’

UPDATED: It looks like the series finale of The Office next spring will wrap the stories of all characters on the Emmy-winning workplace comedy. I’ve learned that NBC will not be proceeding with The Farm, its planned spinoff from The Office. The project, starring Rainn Wilson, was to be introduced as an episode of The Office this season before launching as its own series. That episode will still air. NBC is not commenting, but rumors about The Farm‘s demise started circulating just before lunch. Wilson then confirmed the news on Twitter. “NBC has passed on moving forward with The Farm TV show,” he wrote. “Had a blast making the pilot – onwards & upwards!”

The timing of NBC’s decision is surprising given that it comes before the spinoff episode has aired. The spinoff, created by Wilson and former Office showrunner Paul Lieberstein, has Dwight (Wilson) living at the Schrute family beet farm and bed & breakfast. It co-stars Majandra Delfino, Thomas Middleditch and Tom Bower. There are three other comedy projects in the works for next season that are toplined by Office co-stars, including two half-hours executive produced by The Office boss Greg Daniels — a Harris Wittels project at ABC starring Brian Baumgartner and a comedy starring Craig Robinson and written by The Office‘s Owen Ellickson at NBC. Additionally, The Office‘s Angela Kinsey and Rachel Harris star in a comedy, which has a put pilot commitment at Fox.
