Patti LuPone Returns to ‘Penny Dreadful’ as Series Regular

Tony Award winner Patti LuPone is returning to Showtime’s “Penny Dreadful” as a series regular for season three, the network announced Tuesday.

LuPone guest starred last season as the Cut-Wife, and will take on the new role of Dr. Seward for season three. Seward is an American therapist who treats Vanessa (Eva Green) with an unconventional new treatment.

Also, Shazad Latif (“The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” “Spooks”) joins this season as Robert Louis Stevenson’s Dr. Henry Jekyll, adding to the lineup of literary characters featured in the show.

Other guest stars for season three include: Christian Camargo (“Dexter,” “The Hurt Locker”) as Dr. Alexander Sweet; Sam Barnett (“2012,” “Jupiter Ascending”) as Dr. Seward’s secretary; Wes Studi (“Hell on Wheels,” “A Million Ways to Die in the West”) as Kaetenay, a Native American with a deep connection to Ethan (Josh Hartnett) who also becomes an ally to Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton); and Jessica Barden (“The Outcast,” “Far from the Madding Crowd”) as Justine, a young acolyte to Lily (Billie Piper) and Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney).

“Penny Dreadful” is created, written and executive produced by three-time Oscar nominee John Logan (“Hugo,” “The Aviator,” “Gladiator”) and executive produced by Logan’s Desert Wolf Productions, along with Oscar winner Sam Mendes (“American Beauty,” “Skyfall”) and Pippa Harris (“Revolutionary Road,” “Call The Midwife”), both of Neal Street Productions.

The show is a co-production with Showtime and Sky.Production on the third season “Penny Dreadful” is currently under way in Dublin, Ireland.

The nine-episode third season will premiere on Showtime in 2016.
