'Pretty Little Liars' is back: Which characters are trustworthy?

Yahoo Contributor Network

There was no gentle ease into the return of "Pretty Little Liars" Tuesday night. In fact, the revelations and action didn't let up until the very end! We saw Mona (Janel Parrish) back at school, declaring to anyone who'll listen that she's "better now." It wasn't all about Mona, though. We began to see different sides to a lot of the characters -- but who can we trust?

Those who can't be trusted

Maybe this should be obvious. After everything she did to the pretty little liars, it would take a lot to make people think she's stepped off the crazy train. However, most of her fellow students don't know even half of the sick things she did, and she's already started to win over her classmates. It was obvious from her little meeting with Jason (Drew Van Acker) that she is far from done with her evil schemes, but she does put on a very convincing act. Hanna (Ashley Benson) is probably still the most at risk for falling back under Mona's spell.

Jason has always had a question mark hanging over his head, due to his involvement with the NAT Club. But since we found out he's Spencer's (Troian Bellisario) half-brother, he started to show a softer side. His soft side was quickly canceled out when he hugged Mona on her first day back at school, then brushed off Spencer's warning that Mona is dangerous. The final nail in the trust coffin was firmly hammered in when he later lied to Spencer and let Mona tend to the suspicious wound on his side.

This woman is creepy with a capital C. She has "bunny boiler" stamped all over her and has been nothing but devious and slimy since her first appearance. In last night's episode, she got burned in a fire that seemed to explode out of nowhere. Byron (Chad Lowe) instantly assumed Aria (Lucy Hale) and her friends had some involvement, but they were far too busy checking out the creepy janitor to have set Meredith up. Meredith has always appeared to get pleasure from tormenting Aria, and that doesn't look like it will change any time soon.

Those who can be trusted

Lucas (Brendan Robinson) has long been on the suspicious list with his creeping around and avoidance of Hanna. As it turns out, though, it's starting to seem more like he is another of "A's" innocent victims, perhaps being blackmailed to help take down the pretty little liars. When he revealed to Hanna that Mona crept in and out of Radley at will, he gave us hope that he isn't all bad. He'd never have told Mona's secret if he was truly on her side.

Without a doubt, Byron is one of the more irritating of the liars' parents. He cheated on his wife, he's hypocritical, and he has no concept of an open mind. Byron is the latest in the frame for murdering Ali (Sasha Pieterse) after Spencer found out he was the last person to see Ali alive -- as far as we know for now. Ali tried to blackmail Byron into buying her silence about his affair with Meredith, so he definitely had a motive. But even with his short temper, Byron doesn't seem capable of murder. This will turn out to be another false lead, and the fans' faith in Mr. Montgomery will likely soon be restored.
