‘Pretty Little Liars’ Boosts ABC Family to Summer Ratings Win in Key Demo

For the third time in four summers, ABC Family emerged as the No. 1 cable network for women 18-34 for the season, the demographic most coveted by the “Pretty Little Liars” channel.

The long-running teen drama starring Lucy Hale hit an 18-month high in total viewers with its midseason finale in August. The episode featured the highly-anticipated identity reveal of the mysterious character “A.”

The series averaged a 2.1 rating over its current sixth season in Nielson most current ratings–live plus seven days of playback plus live-plus-same day in the most recent weeks–with an average of 1.5 million viewers per episode, making it the #1 cable series for adults 18-34 for the season.

The midseason finale hauled in 3.1 million total viewers; it also reached a near two-year high in its main demos, adults 18-34 and women in the same age range. The latest episode of “PLL” had a 2.0 rating among adults 18-34. Among just women 18-34, the show pulled a 3.4 rating.

“The Fosters,” ABC Family’s other hit drama, averaged a 1.0 rating and 685,000 total viewers with adults 18-34 over its third season, which is currently airing.

ABC Family’s shows draw big numbers on social media, with Nielsen Twitter TV ratings indicating the “PLL” summer finale was the the top tweeted TV series telecast of the summer, and even the third most tweeted cable TV series episode on record. The “A” unveiling amassed more than 1.6 million tweets, or 50 percent of all Twitter TV Tweet activity on the day it aired.
