RATINGS RAT RACE: ‘Night Shift’ Steady As NBC Wins Night, ‘Extreme Weight Loss’ Gains

Heading into the debut of CBS’ Halle Berry sci-fi thriller Extant tonight and the whirlwind of the Emmy nominations announcement on Thursday, it was a quiet summer primetime on the Big 4 last night. As in previous weeks, an encore of America’s Got Talent (1.7/6) was the highest-rated show of the night. Following that was The Night Shift (1.3/7), NBC’s only new show of the night. Featuring a heavily armed guest appearance by Ray Donovan’s Steven Bauer, the penultimate episode of the first season of the medical drama slipped 7% from its July 1 show – which had been a big leap up from the week before. With a strong lead-in from AGT, Night Shift was the second-highest-rated show of the night among adults 18-49. Overall, NBC won Tuesday both among the key demo with a 1.6/5 rating and 7.416 million viewers.

ABC was the only network to have a full slate of originals with first Extreme Weight Loss (1.0/4) and then Celebrity Wife Swap (1.0/3). With former SNLer Joe Piscopo and The Brady Bunch’s Barry “Greg” Williams doing the honors on the latter, CWS was even with last week while its two-hour lead-in was up 11%.

Both CBS and Fox were all repeats with the latter’s NCIS encore proving the most-watched show of the night with 7.95 million viewers.
