New Reality Show to Focus on "Extended Breast-Feeding," Other Extreme Parenting Techniques
The creator of Dance Moms is developing a new reality show that will document various forms of "extreme parenting," including breast-feeding children who are old enough to walk.
Jeff Collins, the executive producer of the popular Lifetime series, tells Yahoo! he was inspired by the controversial Time magazine cover earlier this year that featured a mother breast-feeding her 3-year-old son. "That cover proves what I've been saying for the last year — America has become a country of extremes," Collins said. "Breast-feeding beyond infancy is just one of the topics we plan to cover," he tells Yahoo! "We've discovered people are raising kids in all kinds of un-traditional ways these days and some people find their methods to be extreme."
Thematically, the series will stick to the Dance Moms formula of exploring eyebrow-raising childrearing practices. "I'm interested in peeling back the curtain to look at choices other people make that will have a huge impact on their children or their lives," Collins said. "I'm fascinated by the way other people raise their children. I grew up in a very conservative small town and everyone kind of raised their kids with the exact same values so it's interesting to me to see so many people breaking the mold of tradition."
The show has yet to find a home but will likely premiere this fall, Collins says. His production company, Collins Avenue Productions, is "in negotiations with several networks."
At least one mother from the Time article will be featured on the show, according to the report.
