For those of us who loves British shows from the 1960s, Dame Diana Rigg is a true TV icon. Best known as the sexy agent Emma Peel from the classic British series "The Avengers," Rigg will soon be returning to TV in a role that won't require a catsuit.
Fans of "Game of Thrones" can look forward to seeing Rigg in Season 3, where she will play Olenna Redwyne, known as the Queen of Thorns because of her thorny, razor sharp wit. Olenna is the grandmother of Margaery Tyrell and is responsible for tutoring her progeny in the ways of the court. Olenna is also responsible for cunning machinations that she has her son Mace enact at her behest.
Diana Rigg has a long history of film and TV roles. Fans of James Bond will recall that Rigg had a major role in the George Lazenby Bond film "On Her Majesty's Secret Service." Rigg played Contessa Teresa "Tracy" di Vicenzo, Bond's love interest in the film and his eventual wife. However, in the final minutes of the film, Rigg's character is the victim of a drive-by shooting, prompting the normally calm Bond to cry profusely. The film is generally considered the worst of all the Bond films because of Lazenby's performance and overly emotionally response to her death.
Some of Diana Rigg's other memorable roles include a turn as the treacherous Regan in a 1983 production of "King Lear" opposite Laurence Olivier, as well as the role of Lady Holiday in "The Great Muppet Caper."
In recent years, she's gained some serious nerd cred. She appeared in the second season of the Ricky Gervais comedy "Extras" with "Harry Potter" star Daniel Radcliffe. The episode is famous for Rigg and Radcliffe playing fictionalized versions of themselves, and Radcliffe constantly hitting on her (he even flirtatiously asks, "Have you still got that that catsuit from 'The Avengers'?") He even throws an unused condom on her head, which draws a stern lesson on manners from the older woman.
In addition to her role on "Game of Thrones," Dame Diana will be starring in another beloved, nerdy TV series in 2013. She will appear in an episode of "Doctor Who" alongside her real-life daughter Rachael Stirling in an unspecified role. However, it is known that the episode was written specifically with Dame Diana and Rachael Stirling in mind.
Whether you were familiar with Dame Diana's work prior to reading this article, one thing's for sure: This versatile and accomplished actress is sure to bring her A-game to "Game of Thrones" Season 3.
