Suits Preview: Mike and Harvey's Top-Secret 'Circle of Knowledge' Grows In Season 2

Summer’s swankiest series, Suits — alliteration intended! — begins its sophomore run tonight at 10/9c on USA Network. Here, executive producer David Bartis assures TVLine that the new season will live up to the rather high bar set in the show’s freshman year — starting with some resolution to all that went down in that shocking finale.

TVLINE | Tell us a little about Season 2. Where do things kick off after that major cliffhanger?
A couple of cliffhangers, actually. [Laughs] The show picks up right where we left off — roughly three days later — and we very quickly address [lingering Season 1 questions] in a very satisfying way.

TVLINE | I think it’s safe to assume that, given the premise of the series, Mike will live to practice law another day. Perhaps someone new will join the circle of trust now that his law school secret may be out?
[Laughs] The best tease is to not tell you, but the circle of knowledge does expand.

TVLINE | How would you describe the dynamic between Mike and Harvey in Season 2?
It’s definitely evolved… You’ll see Harvey (played by Gabriel Macht) giving Mike (Patrick J. Adams) more responsibility. He’s a little more independent and taking on more cases, but he’s still very much learning from Harvey. We wanted to make sure it was a gradual development, and not just come back and he’s another version of Harvey; he’s growing into a different version.

TVLINE | Recurring players Tom Lipinski and Vanessa Ray had large parts in the season-ender. How involved are they this year?
The [answers to that question] aren’t cut and dried, but [their characters], Trevor and Jenny, are back. That particular triangle will be addressed and resolved in certain ways, and then it shifts into a new set of problems.

TVLINE | So, how much Jenny will we see in Season 2?
She won’t be involved as much, but we will see her more than once in the second season.

TVLINE | And are Mike and Rachel still the show’s will they/won’t they duo?
Yes. [Laughs]

TVLINE | Any plans to introduce an actual love interest for Harvey?
We’re going to see Harvey reconnect with at least one woman from his past [one of whom is played by Erinn Hayes], and we’re definitely spending more time revealing Harvey. In Season 1, we revealed a lot about Mike and who he was, [and] this season, we’ll start peeling back some of Harvey’s layers. You’ll see who he is — and that includes relationships.

TVLINE | What’s happening with the secondary characters this season?
The first season, we were establishing the show and leaned heavily on the Mike and Harvey characters for stories. But near the end, we started seeing how new dynamics were shaping up. So, Louis (Rick Hoffman) and Donna (Sarah Rafferty) will continue to have a great thing going. We’re leaning much more on the Harvey/Jessica (Gina Torres) relationship, too. Last season we also pursued the question of Rachel (Meghan Markle) taking the LSATs, and we’ll get back into that storyline.

TVLINE | Talk a little about David Costabile joining this season as the firm’s never-before-seen boss, Hardman.
The character left under a cloud five years before the show started, and we will reveal the circumstances under which he exited and why everything is different now. He comes back in, maybe a changed man, and everybody is trying to figure out what his intentions are. When he left, he was the boss, and now Jessica’s the boss.

TVLINE | She’s probably not going to step down without a fight.
Probably not.

TVLINE | Would you say that Season 1 is on par with what ended up being an all-around great freshman run?
I know I’m biased, but I think the show has gotten more sophisticated, more dynamic… We were able to keep the best of our crew and talent from last year, and everything just got better… To me, everything is notched up; it’s more exciting and funnier and more dramatic. I’m super excited about it.
