Tobey Maguire's Spidey Advice to Andrew Garfield

Tobey Maguire's Spidey Advice to Andrew Garfield

There have been many occasions in which one star passed the keys to a major franchise to another, from Spider-Man and Superman to Bond and Batman. But it may be unprecedented to have the former hero interview the new recruit for an extended magazine interview right before the opening of their debut movie/reboot as the character.

In the new issue of VMAN, on stands May 17, original big-screen Spidey Tobey Maguire interviews new Peter Parker Andrew Garfield in a candid conversation about costumes, cattle calls and great expectations.

"When [The Amazing Spider-Man] was coming together, I was particularly excited at two moments: one was when [director] Marc Webb got involved. I think he's an interesting and cool choice. And then I was certainly curious as to who was going to play Peter Parker," Maguire tells Garfield. "When I heard it was you, I was literally like, [f-ing] perfect! I just want it to be great, and I thought, what a great actor Andrew is, I'm glad that's what's happening here."

"Oh, man," gushes Garfield. "That's so nice of you." The 28-year-old star of such films as The Social Network and Never Let Me Go was eager to know how Maguire's life changed that comes along with the fame of being Spider-Man, saying, "Right now I have a host of fears that I'm contending with on a minute-to-minute basis. I'm not in the reality of it yet, so I'm sure I'm imagining it will be much worse than it is."

"So much shifted in my life the weekend the movie came out. It was shocking," says Maguire. "It was a lot more attention than what I was used to. But for you, you seem to be more prepared for it than I was. Hopefully it won't be as violent for you from one day to the next."

The original Spider-Man was the first Hollywood blockbuster to cross the $100 million mark on its opening weekend back in 2002. Overall, the Sam Raimi-directed trilogy pulled in $2.5 billion at the box office.

"Just remember to enjoy the ride," advises Maguire. "It will be fun, I'm sure. And weird. And all kinds of things. But enjoy the ride. And then get back to work soon!"

As for the future of Spider-Man, Andrew is grounded and philosophical about his role in the franchise: "I'm the guy in the suit and there'll be another guy in the suit later on down the line. This whole celebrity myth is very new and interesting to me, whether one can just be an actor and also be in one of these roles. … I know that I love acting, and that's pretty much it."
