TVWrap Sunday: ‘GoT’ Deadly Deviation, ‘Secrets’ Killer Revealed, And ‘Last Man’s’ Out-of-This-World Finale

(Spoiler alert: Please do not read on if you did not watch television on Sunday, May 3, 2015. There be spoiler-y waters ahead.)

HBO’s “Game of Thrones” strayed from the source material in a deadly way this week, while ABC’s “Secrets & Lies” wrapped up its first season with a killer reveal, and Fox’s “The Last Man on Earth” gained a much wider perspective in its own finale. There’s so much great television on Sunday night these days, it’s a wonder cable and satellite services don’t crash every weekend like they did for #PacMan.

Not to worry, though. TVWrap has you covered with a look back over the wildest, craziest, funniest and buzziest moments on prime-time television for Sunday, May 3, 2015.

“Game of Thrones” Strays From Its Source

Finally leaving all those smug book fans as stunned and speechless as everyone else has been since that brutal first season finale, HBO’s adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice & Fire” book series took its first major detour from the source material, with possible deadly results.

It looks like the writers’ room forgot their reading copies of “A Feast of Crows” and “A Dance with Dragons” at home, as it looks like they totally killed off at least one character, and maybe two … before Martin got a chance to off them in his books. He’s probably planning a writers’ room wedding right now to exact his revenge.

So it looks like “GoT” is going the way of “The Walking Dead” and creating an alternate storyline with different fates in store for different characters from the source material. It’s a smart move as it keeps the book readers on their toes, and could make their tendency to spoil major events (like the “Red Wedding”) more difficult. Plus, Martin is in no hurry to finish the next book.

So it’s good news for everybody, except people who live to spoil things for others, Ser Barristan Selmy (Ian McElhinney) and Grey Worm (Jacob Anderson). McElhinney confirmed his character’s death at least in a post-show interview with Entertainment Weekly, while an earlier trailer for the season may have spoiled that Grey Worm will survive this ordeal.

“Secrets & Lies” Wraps Season With Killer Surprise

In the final episode of “Secrets & Lies” — which has yet to get a pickup for a second season – Tom’s killer was revealed, and it may be the most unlikely of suspects. As soon as Ben (Ryan Phillippe) was cleared as a suspect, his youngest daughter Abby (Belle Shouse) confessed to the crime.

But even this wasn’t the biggest surprise of the hour.

Abby said that it was an accident, saying that she’d accidentally hit her little brother with a flashlight, and then panicked when he died and tried to cover it up. Willing to do anything for his little girl, Ben turned around and confessed, allowing Abby to get away with her mother Christy (KaDee Strickland).

When the autopsy results came in, though, it was clear that this was no accident. Tom was beat to death by his 12-year-old sister, who then orchestrated a brilliant cover-up plan. This sets Abby up as the “big band” for Season 2, with Det. Cornelle (Juliette Lewis) on the case to try and take her down.

“The Last Man on Earth” Introduces “The Last Man Over Earth”

Fox’s unexpected hit post-apocalyptic comedy wrapped up its expansive first season by rebooting the premise and introducing an unexpected new character. Since its premiere, “Last Man” has surprised fans again and again by proving that Will Forte‘s Phil Miller is definitely not the last man on Earth.

Now we learn he’s not even the last member of his family… though he may remain the last one on Earth. Seen briefly in the pilot in a family photo, Jason Sudeikis made a surprise appearance in the closing moments as an astronaut in a space station orbiting the quiet earth.

As if that wasn’t enough to whet our Season 2 appetites, Phil and Carol (Kristen Schaal) reconnected after Phil was thrown out of Tucson and decide to hit the open road together. This sets up a road trip aspect for at least part of Season 2, which could introduce a whole new cast of disparate characters and fresh opportunities for Phil to prove himself an idiot.

“Mad Men” Dumps All Over Its Women

The women’s lib movement is going strong in the era of “Mad Men’s” final season, but unfortunately it hasn’t yet penetrated the walls of McCann-Erickson. After getting absorbed by the behemoth, Peggy (Elisabeth Moss) and Joan (Christina Hendricks) suddenly found themselves second-class citizens, with Joan taking the biggest hit this week.

The SC&P partner was suddenly reduced to a junior account executive, and even in this capacity she had no respect. Once again, after all she had gained, Joan found herself objectified and sexually harassed … only this time it wasn’t to advance her career, but to try and hold on to some semblance of it.

Even the men of SC&P, didn’t do anything to help her. They’d benefited in this new corporate environment because they were men. She could threaten to call the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission all she wanted, but this is a boy’s club, sweetheart. So just sit down and shut up.

Even Roger Sterling (John Slattery) betrayed all they’d been through together, pushing her to accept a pithy buyout and leave. As for Peggy, she strolls in all cocky and confident that she’s the new Don Draper (Jon Hamm) of McKann-Erickson at the close of the hour. Could she defy the odds, or will she be stomped into the dirt like Joan was this week?

“Revenge” Sets Up a Killer Series Finale

She’s ba-a-a-ack! Did we have any doubt that Victoria Grayson (Madeleine Stowe) was still alive? Of course not. This is about a sudsy as a soap opera can be. Besides, Emily/Amanda’s (Emily VanCamp) whole revenge question started with Victoria, so it’s only appropriate that it end with her.

Next week’s series finale is titled “Two Graves,” which is rather foreboding. In a show that hasn’t been afraid to stack up the bodies, would it take out its two leading ladies in its closing moments? Seems like perhaps the most appropriate ending, which is why one final unexpected twist is probably more likely.
