‘View’ Co-Host on Bruce Jenner Transition: Maybe He’ll ‘Make Kanye a Republican’ (Video)
The hosts of “The View” were less surprised by Bruce Jenner’s announcement that he’s a woman than they were by Jenner’s disclosure that he’s a Republican.
“Maybe Bruce will make Kanye [West] a Republican,” conservative co-host Nicolle Wallace said. Fellow co-host Whoopi Goldberg laughed at the idea, saying “In America, everything is possible.”
The discussion about West arose as the hosts discussed Jenner crediting the rapper with helping his stepdaughter, Kim Kardashian-West, understand his transition.
“Kanye, thank you,” co-host Rosie Perez said. “Because I get a lot of criticism for defending Kanye.” Wallace interjected: “Really? I get death threats for making fun of him.”
Perez went on to say that West’s understanding of Jenner’s situation speaks to the larger issues at play. “We pre-judge people,” Perez said. “We really don’t know who they are, who they are as a whole person. The point is that, who would have thought that Kanye West was the person that brought Kim to the understanding?”
Alonzo also likened Jenner’s announcement to her own desire to hide the fact that she was poor when she was a child.

“That showed me that all of us carry something within us that we struggle with sometimes,” she said. “And once we overcome that we become more ourselves, more comfortable in our skin.”
Jenner’s interview was a major ratings winner for ABC. The interview, airing from 9 to 11 p.m., scored a remarkable 5.2 rating/17 share in the advertiser-sought 18-49 demographic and a 6.4/18 in the key news demo. Those numbers represent the best performance for “20/20” since March 17, 2000. The interview also drew 16.9 million total viewers.
