Any avid "Housewives" aficionado can tell you that the shows are rife with drama. Pick any city of Bravo's hit reality franchise, and you'll find divorces, threats of physical violence, baby mama drama, bankruptcies, copious drinking, and foreclosures. Everyone pretends that this indicates the demise of society but truth be told, it's why fans watch. These are our modern day soap operas; updated tales of woe that our great grandmas listened to as radio plays.
Nonetheless, we're not all masochistic sourpusses, so we need the joyful to counteract the stressful times. Pandora's wedding on "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" offset the tragedy of Russell Armstrong's suicide. Melissa Gorga's peppy pop singer aspirations add color to the bleak family turmoil stirred by her "Real Housewives of New Jersey" sister-in-law, Teresa Giudice. Kandi Burress' wild sex toy party successes on the "Real Housewives of Atlanta" allow us to tolerate the increasing acidity of Nene Leakes. Just as in life, the good times add sugar to the bad.
The "Real Housewives of Orange County" women are the divas that kicked off all of the madness. Their show was intended to pull back the velvet ropes on a closed community. The main story? "Look, y'all! These privileged people are just as messed up as you are!" We agree, and we love it.
Cast member Tamra Barney has certainly been through her share of on-camera strife. Any viewer could have predicted the demise of her marriage to Simon. The man appeared to be mean, controlling, and selfish. Meanwhile it seemed as though poor Tamra was jumping through hoops to make her gloomy hubby happy. She even had a tattooed wedding ring needled onto her finger as a symbol of her love. Ouch!
After that mess of a relationship crashed and burned, mama got her groove back with Eddie Judge. Tamra's new man is a hunky Latin lover who seems wealthy, and most importantly, all about Tam. Every woman watching shouted, yes! Who could blame the 'vixen gone wild' when she shot a naked bathtub scene with Eddie last season? (Apparently, her castmates could, if you watched the nasty reunion specials.)
This week, Eddie popped the question and Tamra said yes. The romantic backdrop was Bora Bora. Tamra squealed with happiness and so did her fans and frenemies alike.
These reality characters are our friends who allow us a respite from the dramas in our own lives. As Bravo keeps the vicious fights coming, we hope that Andy Cohen remembers to heap on the moments of joy like this one. Frankly, we all need it!
Congrats on your engagement to wed, Tamra and Eddie. Mazel tov!
